Charting the Terrain before a Hike

As an avid hiker, it’s absolutely essential that I have a firm grasp of the lay of the land. I set aside an hour or two before every camping trip to plot out my hikes, making sure to bring the proper supplies and gear in accordance with the temperature and altitude. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way what happens when I don’t pay enough attention to the topography of a region before a hike.

Without realizing it, I found myself in a high-altitude area that became tremendously cold at night – so much so that I sat up most of the night with my teeth chattering. If I had simply consulted Garmin topo maps, I would have known to bring an extra-insulated, cold-rated sleeping bag. Ever since that embarrassing incident, I’ve always been prepared for the terrain and the elements to come

marine gps mount

When most people think of GPS technology, it’s probably the version made for cars that comes immediately to mind. Still, one could argue that these systems are even more practical for use on boats. When ships and small craft are far from land on an overcast evening, natural navigational clues are scarce indeed. With no lighthouse or constellations to guide them, boaters can drift far off course.

By putting a navigational system onto a marine GPS mount, it’s possible to avoid these problems entirely. GPS can also save the lives of the crew and passengers by alerting them about the presence of rock outcroppings and other treacherous debris that might be waiting in the murky depths. Clearly it’s just as crucial to have easy navigation ability at sea.

Why would you want to waste your investment by allowing it to become utterly beaten and scratched? Handheld GPS mounts come in several varieties and designs to accommodate each and every GPS model. You can also choose whether you’d like a windshield mount, a dashboard mount or a mount that clips to your AC vent. Never again will you swerve as you reach to rescue your GPS from bouncing throughout your car. Protect your technology today!

garmin370.jpg

If you’ve ever moved to a new city and found yourself completely lost among the skyscrapers, one-way streets and heavy traffic, it may be time for you to consider investing in a global positioning system – more commonly to referred to as a GPS. When I moved to Seattle a little over a year ago, I felt like I had moved to the other side of the world having grown up on the East coast. I felt turned around, backwards even, and if it wasn’t for the water’s edge my cardinal directions would have been jumbled. Needless to say, I was in dire need of a GPS.

After reading multiple consumer reports, defining my basic needs and my budget I was ready to make my purchase. The Garmin NUVI 370 GPS was the model I chose, and boy could it do wonders! Instantly I knew back-road secrets, as if I’d lived there my whole life, that helped me dodge heavily congested traffic areas. My life quickly changed. All I ever needed to journey through the city was the address of where I was headed – no directions required.

Never Get Lost On Your Motorcycle

Websites like MapQuest and Google Maps are very popular and convenient for finding directions to one location. You can even print them out to refer to while in your car. Before I got my first GPS system, I mastered how to drive while glancing at my directions every so often. It can be done, but having my GPS with me is much more convenient!

If you ride a motorcycle, referring to printed directions is not even an option. Any piece of paper you tried to hold would fly away in about two seconds. A motorcycle GPS mount is the best choice for any motorcycle rider because the GPS is sturdily attached to the bike. Look for a model that has tough, weather-proof casing, an anti-glare screen, and a touch screen that can work with a gloved hand. An extra cool system can transmit spoken instructions to you using a built-in Bluetooth audio system, via a headset that fits in your helmet

Protect Your GPS

One of the most useful places you can use a GPS system is in your car. How many times have we all gotten lost and wish we had someone or something to tell us exactly where to go? How much time would we save if we never got lost again? Unfortunately, there is a dark side to using a GPS system in your car: theft! Leaving your GPS in your car after you park makes you a prime target for car prowls. In these tough economic times, thieves are more desperate for quick cash, and smash-and-grab crimes are on the rise. They often take less than 60 seconds to complete, and since most prowls occur between midnight and 6 a.m., most people don’t discover their car window smashed and GPS gone until they go to work in the morning.

My friend was recently the victim of a car prowl. She left her Garmin dash mount GPS in her car, in full view of any passerby. One morning she discovered that it was missing, and her driver’s side window was shattered. Not only did she have to buy a new GPS, but she had to have her window replaced. If you invest in a high-quality system, recovering from a car prowl is especially costly. Do yourself a favor to prevent this crime and never leave your GPS or any other valuables in your car – even hiding it in a glove box or the trunk isn’t a guarantee that it will be safe.

Helpful Tips for Getting in Shape

When it comes to getting in shape, summer is no doubt the season. People want to lose a few pounds to spend time at the beach and look good in their swimsuit, or just take advantage of the warmer weather to exercise outside. The best part of getting in shape in summer is, it doesn’t take all that long to lose a few pounds at the beginning of summer, and then spend the rest in grandeur. While it’s a good idea to avoid all the “miracle diets” that boast losing several pounds in the first week, dropping ten to fifteen pounds in a six week span is not out of the question. While most health experts recommend weight loss of about one pound per week, losing more is possible for the person who is dedicated to the task at hand.

For exercise, it will be important to exercise five times per week for about one to two hours. This might sound like a lot, but most everyone can block out an hour of their day for fitness, even if it’s in the morning or right before bed. It doesn’t matter so much what kind of exercise it is, as long as it’s rigorous physical activity. Hiring a personal trainer helps a lot, but of course, purchasing an electronic trainer like the Garmin Edge 205 GPS can work much better for those wanting to save on cost. It’s also important to diet and eat right to lose weight. Eat lots of greens, drink tea instead of coffee, avoid sugars and fats, and it’s hard to go wrong. Get an ideal body before the middle of summer, and reap the rewards thereafter!

High Tech Exercise Gear

Exercising in the 21st century is a little different than it was in the past, and it’s important to utilize modern innovation to maximize exercise effectiveness. This modern innovation includes incorporating the knowledge about proper exercise routines that has developed throughout the ages, and also using the best equipment. For example, it’s been illustrated that a walkman can increase exercise effectiveness as people have a natural tendency to time their steps or motions with the beat of the music, which helps with motivation. It’s also a good idea to have a high tech personal trainer like the Garmin Edge 305 GPS, which is great for planning out running routes and tracking progress. The Garmin Edge 305 GPS is much more effective than a pedometer, and with it, it’s simple for people to track their progress.

It’s also important to recognize that combining exercise with proper diet increases metabolism, boosts muscle growth, and provides more energy. Whether exercising at the gym or at the home, having the right modern tools will make it easier to achieve success.

Road Tripping Essentials

With one of the largest highway systems of any country in the world, there’s nothing quite like road tripping in the United States. The U.S. is so interconnected and so vast that one could spend their entire lifetime on the road and not see all that America has to offer. Road tripping is one of America’s favorite pastimes, and is an experience all Americans should have at some point or another. The summer months are the ideal months for road tripping, and when road tripping whether in the summer heat or in the dead of winter, there are a few essentials all travelers. First, it’s important to have a good GPS device. Unless planning on never leaving the highway, a GPS device is an essential for all road trippers. Consider something like the Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS; a handheld device that is affordable with several contemporary functions. It’s also a good idea to keep a map around just in case.

Other road trip essentials include sun block (no one wants a trucker’s tan!), extra food and water, a quart of oil, a gallon of gasoline, and at least one change of clothes. These extras will help to prevent danger on the road and promote safety when partaking in America’s favorite pastime.
