GPS receivers are patched into a system of 27 satellites orbiting the Earth. These receivers have an electronic almanac which tells them where each satellite should be at any given time. They receive data from these satellites about where the receiver is located. The Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx is one of the most popular models for outdoor and marine use. This unit features a removable microSD card for detailed mapping memory and a waterproof, rugged housing.

The microSD card is located inside the waterproof battery compartment where users can load map data and transfer routes and waypoints through the units fast USB connection. This unit also features a new, highly sensitive GPS receiver that can acquire satellites faster and will let the user track their location in challenging conditions, such as heavy foliage or deep canyons. It also incorporates a barometric altimeter for extremely accurate elevation data.

A recent visit to Japan reminded me of the movie Lost In Translation. I could relate entirely. I needed to go to some areas for business. It being my first time, I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t have time to brush up on any Japanese phrases. With that said, you can imagine that even ordering a soda had its hassles.

There was a time that I got lost walking the subways. At that point, I was hoping that I had some sort of electronic map like a Garmin Nuvi GPS with me. I did buy a classic paper based map but still, I got lost. But the people there were so friendly and helpful, they’d go with me directly to the station I needed to board! Really nice of them. Over all I had a good time, even if I did get lost literally and figuratively.
